On World Refugee Day, celebrated on June 20, several Spanish media outlets have echoed the report “Crossing Lines: Realities of Migrant Children at EU External Borders” written by Save the Children, which warns about the failures in the procedures for estimating the legal age (18 years in different member countries of the European Union) of migrant minors without family references.

We know that this is a very delicate and highly complex context in which legal, ethical, and technical challenges converge. We also know that we need more human resources, more training for the teams involved, better coordination, uniformity of action, as well as more precise and reliable methodologies.

At Panacea Cooperative Research, we have been working and collaborating for years with the University of Granada, A Coruña, Santiago, and León (in addition to a large group of researchers from all over the world) to contribute to this improvement with the purpose of providing the competent authorities with valid tools for evaluation.

To date, we have developed a cutting-edge research line applied to the estimation of legal age, reaching an unprecedented accuracy, by applying Artificial Intelligence techniques to radiological images of carpus, teeth, and clavicles. We are currently working on the development of non-invasive methods based on facial photographs and DNA.
